Why Is Progesterone So Important For Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is considered a normal event that can happen in a woman’s life. If intercourse occurs during ovulation and a sperm successfully reaches an egg, fertilization might occur. Ideally, the embryo will travel down into the uterus and implant into the endometrial lining. If all is well, the pregnancy will progress as planned and in 9 months a baby will be born. However, this clinical discussion of gestation ignores the fact that getting pregnant requires a delicate balance of hormones. If a woman’s hormonal balance isn’t correct, a variety of key stages such as ovulation, implantation, and even carrying a baby to term might not happen. A specific hormone that’s influential with conception is progesterone.

The importance of progesterone

Progesterone is a hormone that’s actually found in both men and women. However, the substance serves a different purpose in both genders and is produced in various locations. For women, the hormone can be sourced in the ovaries and adrenal glands. In pregnant individuals the placenta also produces progesterone. Although associated with pregnancy, this substance is also credited with supporting sleep cycles, bone health and even cardiovascular function. The hormone is also linked with managing emotional stability.

Progesterone and menstruation

Even though progesterone is known as the pregnancy hormone, a core function occurs regularly every month whether a woman conceives or not. Menstruation is divided into 4 stages, with certain bodily shifts occurring depending on hormone levels. Specifically, ovulation is the cue for rising progesterone levels. However, the hormone is locally produced in the corpus luteum, which is the newly emptied egg follicle. The increased progesterone levels trigger the endometrium lining to thicken during ovulation. If an egg isn’t fertilized, the hormonal levels drop, and the lining sheds during the actual menstruation stage. Likewise, the corpus luteum will break down.

The impact for pregnancy

If an egg is fertilized during the ovulation window, the corpus luteum remains intact and continues producing more progesterone. This process triggers the uterine lining to remain thick, waiting for implantation. If an embryo successfully burrows into the lining, once the placenta forms the new tissue will begin producing progesterone independently.

Why progesterone is important

Beyond simply preparing the uterus for pregnancy and maintaining uterine lining thickness, progesterone performs several other important functions. The high hormonal levels prevent the ovaries from releasing additional eggs during the pregnancy. Similarly, the substance suppresses uterine contractions, ensuring that a woman doesn’t go into labor prematurely.

Hormones and pregnancy

Progesterone is just one of several hormones that influences getting pregnant and gestation. When these levels aren’t within optimal range, a woman may be more prone to experiencing miscarriages, or not being able to get pregnant naturally at all. After testing, some women may be diagnosed with endometrial receptivity which indicates that the uterine lining isn’t at the right thickness to support implantation. When such a case occurs, hormonal supplementation might be recommended to improve fertility outcomes.
